The Citadel Alumni Association Contributes to Scholarships

The Citadel Alumni Association capped off a banner year of giving at its annual membership meeting. The Association will contribute $900,000 to support college operations, CAA legacy cadet and need-based scholarships, and enhance The Citadel’s Service to Country Tuition Scholarships and National Service Room and Board Scholarships for ROTC cadets.

Juntz, USAR, ’07, CGC '12, was awarded the General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award for exemplifying the principles of duty, honor and country and demonstrating exceptional leadership abilities on Nov. 6, 2024, by U.S. Army Chief of Staff, GEN Randy A. George; Chief of the U.S. Army Reserve, LTG Robert D. Harter; and U.S. Army Deputy Chief of Staff LTG Joseph A. Ryan.
  • Pat Conroy's first book, The Boo, was published on January 1, 1970, by McClure Press after Conroy self-published in 1969.
  • On December 30, 1960, The Citadel Football participated in and won its only bowl game appearance. The Bulldogs beat Tennessee Tech 27-0 in the Tangerine Bowl, Orlando, Fla.

Lt Gen John B. Sams, Jr., USAF, Ret., '67

Sams is a retired U.S. Air Force command pilot with more than 6,000 flight hours, including 700 combat hours over Vietnam. He served in the Air Force for 32 years before joining the Boeing Company and later starting his own aerospace consulting firm. 

Sams served for six years on The Citadel Board of Visitors, the final two as board chair. He served as interim president for the college in 2018.

Along with the Class of 1967, Sams played a vital role in the building of The Citadel War Memorial, which was unveiled at Homecoming 2017 during the Class of 1967's 50th reunion.

Sams received  an honorary Doctorate of Aerospace Studies from The Citadel in 2019.

A special rate has been negotiated at the SpringHill Suites Charleston Riverview for $239/night for Gold Corps attendees. The rate includes parking, wi-fi, and breakfast. Registration will open in January and will be $120 per person which includes the Friday afternoon welcome reception and program, the Friday evening dinner, Saturday luncheon, on campus golf cart shuttling service and commemorative gifts.
