The Tilghman Courtyard, named in honor of Horace L. “Son” Tilghman, ’41, and his wife Kitty Lou Tilghman, is a favorite spot for visitors to the Alumni Center.

The courtyard is enclosed with stucco walls and wrought iron gates which reflect the Spanish-Moorish architecture of the campus. The courtyard also features a set of gates which were once included in Gen. Mark W. Clark’s collection in the college museum. Fountains on the east and west sides of the wall are surrounded by shrubbery, trees, palmettos and seasonal plantings which remind visitors of South Carolina’s peaceful, coastal gardens and retreats.
