W. Taylor Barron, Jr., ’45

Walter Taylor Barron, Jr. September 20, 1924 November 23, 2018 A memorial service to honor the life of Walter Taylor Barron, Jr., 94, of Camden, SC, will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Bethesda Presbyterian Church. Rev. Jim Burton will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service in John Knox Hall. Memorials may be made to Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 502 E. DeKalb Street, Camden, SC 29020 or Quaker Cemetery Memorial Fund, PO Box 788, Camden, SC 29020. Mr. Barron, widower of Jane Ferguson Barron, died peacefully on November 23, 2018. Born on September 20, 1924 in the family home in Fort Mill, SC to Walter T. Barron, Sr. and Olive Harris Barron. Mr. Barron attended Fort Mill schools and graduated from Fort Mill High School in 1941. He entered The Citadel in 1941. On December 1942, Mr. Barron volunteered for military service and entered the Infantry, US Army. He served in World War II until September 1946, rising in rank from Private to Captain. His last assignment was Military Commander, Ibaraki, Prefecture, Japan, as Commanding Officer of Troop A, 8 th Calvary. With the end of the war, he returned to the Citadel as a veteran student and graduated in 1948. Mr. Barron was recalled to active duty from the Army Reserves, serving one year at the Infantry School, Fort Benning, GA and one year at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and trained troops for the Korean War. Just prior to shipping out for Hawaii on February 2, 1952, Jane Ferguson and Walter Barron were married in York, SC. While stationed at Schofield Barracks, their son, Walter T. Barron, III was born at Tripler Army Hospital. Upon returning home, Mr. Barron entered the civilian workforce and retired from Lederle Laboratories as a pharmaceutical representative. He also continued to serve in the Army Reserves retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Barron was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Camden, the Kershaw County Golden Club (serving as President in 1996), the American Legion Post 17, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Sons of the American Revolution (having served as State President). In 1990, Mr. Barron received permission from the Veteran’s Administration, Washington, D.C. to erect a Revolutionary War Memorial in Camden, SC at Quaker Cemetery (where he once served on the board). He singlehandedly raised the required funds, researched records of Patriots, proved Patriot service and erected the memorial at Quaker Cemetery, Meeting Street, in Camden. Mr. Barron is survived by his daughters, Louise Quinn Barron of Columbia and Harris Barron Baker of Camden; granddaughters, Elizabeth Quinn Baker and Ellen Barron Baker of Camden; and his brother, William H. Barron (Patty) of Fort Mill, SC. Besides his parents, Mr. Barron was predeceased by his wife, Jane, on October 17, 2012 after 60 years of marriage; his son, Taylor, on December 3, 2006 and a sister, Mary Barron McFadden Baumgardner of Fort Mill in 2014. A special thanks to the wonderful staff of the Karesh Wing and Compassionate Health Hospice for the great care they gave our father in his last days. We appreciate you.
