Stephen Thomas “Steve” Spencer, 74, of Camden, died Friday, December 23, 2022, from health complications. His life was defined by his great character, tireless dedication to serving others, and love for his family.
Steve Spencer was born in Greensboro, NC to the late Winfred Irving Spencer and late Opal McMillan Spencer. Steve grew up in Fayetteville, NC before his family moved to Myrtle Beach. He spent summers as a Myrtle Beach lifeguard and perfecting the shag on the Grand Strand. While attending Myrtle Beach High School he was active in many clubs and was a member of the golf team. Following graduation, Steve attended The Citadel, where his life-long qualities of honesty, integrity, faith and discipline would be firmly ingrained. Steve’s leadership was recognized at The Citadel where he served as Company Academic Officer and earning the high honor of being selected into the Summerall Guard.
Upon graduation, Steve served as 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force before returning home to work for the City of Myrtle Beach. Steve would eventually be known for his award-winning 35-year career with Motorola which ultimately brought him back home to South Carolina.
Steve was married to the love of his life, Nancy, whom he met in Atlanta and had been married to for 38 years. Steve and Nancy enjoyed playing tennis, golf and traveling to the beach and mountains, eventually calling both home. In his retirement he continued to serve his community through the Rotary Club of Columbia, Rotary Club of Cashiers Valley and served as the President of the Wild Dunes Board of Directors.
Steve is survived by his wife, Nancy Simonini Spencer, and three children, Jennifer Tammaro and her husband John of Davidson, NC; Jeff Spencer and his wife Kate of Charlotte, NC; and Stephen and his wife Amanda of Camden; and grandchildren John “Tripp”, Reid, and Laine Tammaro of Davidson, NC; Charles, Wade, and William Spencer of Charlotte, NC; and Thomas and Mary Margaret Spencer of Camden.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Barbara Spencer of Greensboro, NC; niece Lea Kirkman and her husband John of Greensboro, NC; nephew Donald Spencer, Jr. and his wife Caroline of Knoxville, TN; Judy Price and her husband Grady of Ramer, AL; Bonnie Moore and her husband Jerome of Montgomery, AL, and Fred Beall and his wife Diane of Myrtle Beach, SC.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Donald Irving Spencer of Greensboro, NC and step-mother Dorothy Young “Dot” Spencer of Myrtle Beach, SC.
A memorial service will be held at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church in Camden on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 11:00 am with a reception immediately following.
