Colonel (Retired) Maynard A. Austin, Jr., USA, of Purcellville, VA, died July 14, 2017. He had a long and illustrious career in with US Army Special Operations – having commanded at every level from platoon to brigade. His last command was the Special Mission Unit located in northern Virginia. Maynard, who was a graduate of the US Army’s Ranger, Special Forces, and Jumpmaster courses, was a career intelligence officer who participated in combat operations in Central America, the Balkans, Central and Southwest Asia. Graduating with his class in 1976, he was member of Kilo Company and the ‘76 Drill. He will be interned with full military honours on a future date at Arlington National Cemetery.
Colonel Austin is survived by his wife of 41 years, Lisa M. Austin, who resides at 37154 Cardigan Place, Purcellville, Virginia, 20132-5051; two sons, M. Avery Austin III, ’00, and Mason M. Austin, ’03, and two grandchildren.
