Lonnie Bales, 87, of Milledgeville, Ga., passed away Saturday, Nov. 7, 2020. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, at First Presbyterian Church in Milledgeville with the Rev. Susan Balfour officiating. Safety distancing guidelines will be followed and masks are required. Burial will follow at Baldwin Memorial Gardens Cemetery. For those not able to attend the church service, your presence is desired at the graveside. Mr. Bales was born in Warren County, Georgia, on Sept. 20, 1933, to Lillian Redfern and Lewis Bales. He entered the United States Navy and during his 20-year service, he served in the Korean War. While serving in the Navy, Mr. Bales earned a BA degree in English (with a minor in business) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He later earned a master’s of education from the Citadel. After his retirement from the Navy, he returned to Milledgeville and began a career in education at Georgia Military College. While at GMC, he taught English and worked in several administration roles, retiring as GMC’s vice president for student affairs and dean of students. While at GMC, he also taught various levels of English courses at Georgia College. Mr. Bales was also very active with civic clubs in Milledgeville. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club (serving as treasurer, vice president and president), The Planters Club, the Macon Motor Boat Club (serving as treasurer), the Georgia Retired Educators Association, the Masonic Fraternity (50-Year Membership), and Learning in Retirement. As an active member of First Presbyterian Church, he participated on many committees and served as a church deacon. Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Lillian Bales; his brother, Emmett Bales; and his sister, Elsie Bales Davis. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Vera Spear Bales of Milledgeville; two daughters, Leslie Anne Bales Black of Alpharetta and Barbara Miller (Dan) of Covington; a granddaughter, Ashleigh Knight, and two great grandsons, Joey and Kindler. Mr. Bales is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Moores Funeral Home.
