John Weldon Hunter, Jr. passed away peacefully on Monday, September 24, 2018 after a courageous 16 year battle with cancer as a result of Agent Orange. He was born in Raleigh on October 31, 1947 to John Weldon Hunter, Sr. and Nancy Wilds Coggeshall Hunter who predeceased him.
John attended Needham B. Broughton High School, Class of 1965, and graduated from Oak Ridge Military Academy. He graduated from The Citadel, Class of 1970 and was a member of T Company. John served in the US Army and US Army Reserves, retiring in 2003. He loved the outdoors, nature, dove hunting, fishing, anything to do with the Citadel, travel with Sallye and day trips with his cousin and best friend, George Hunter, to dine on N.C. Barbeque.
In 1988, John married Sallye Musser, the love of his life who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister Nan Hunter Rogers, niece Margaret Rogers Mayo (Billy), nephew Steve Rogers (Hannah), great nephews and niece Hunter Mayo, Ainsley Mayo and John Griffin Rogers, plus his fur babies Dallas and Denver.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 28 at Peace Presbyterian Church, 1777 West Chatham St, Cary, NC with visitation following the service.
