John Gaillard Martin, of Columbia, died December 29, ,2010. Service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with the Rev. Canon Robert G. Riegel officiating. Born June 26, 1923, in New London, Conn., he was a son of Admiral Charles F. Martin and Susie Gaillard Martin. He attended The Citadel for two years prior to volunteering for the U.S. Army, after which he attended the George Washington School of Law. After moving to Columbia in 1945, Mr. Martin was a clerk in the S.C. House of Representatives and employed by American Title Company and Title Company of Minnesota. He was a member and former Senior Warden of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, served as Chancellor of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina under four bishops and was on the board of the National Episcopal Church for several years. He was a former vice-president of the National Heart Association, and a member of the Eastern Columbia Lions Club and Carolina Carillon. An avid tennis player, Jack was ranked in three categories by the S.C. Tennis Association during the same year. Surviving are his wife, Jeanie McGowan Holmes Martin; sons, John Gaillard Martin Jr. of Rock Hill and McGowan Boykin Martin of Columbia; grandchildren, Dale Martin and James Martin of Rock Hill and Ashley Martin and McGowan Martin II of Columbia. He was predeceased by a brother, The Rev. Franklin Martin.
