Jay was born May 9, 1948, in Mullins, South Carolina, son of the late Buford Kaminer Stabler and the late Flora Shelley Stabler. He grew up in Loris, South Carolina. A 1970 graduate of The Citadel, Jay worked at Southeastern Maritime, Bulldog Hiway Express and was Regional Sales Director for Bridge Terminal Transport. He was a former member of Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church and currently a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church, where son Kam Stabler is pastor.
Jay is survived by his loving wife of fifty-five years, Bonnie McPhail Stabler of Mount Pleasant; two sons, Brian Kaminer Stabler (Bethany) of Hanahan, SC, and Ross McPhail Stabler (Jamie) of Mount Pleasant, SC; four grandchildren, Mac Stabler, Jane Stabler, Delaney Stabler, and Hope Stabler; sister, Buford Brannen of Register, Georgia; and Jerry Lewis Stabler (Phyllis) of Fernandina, Florida. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sue Hodges of Statesboro, Georgia.
Many of Jay’s friends and family called him “Jaybird” due to his warm and playful nature. He was a master of “the prank” and the recipient of plenty payback. He was a country boy by nature; loved trout fishing in the Wando River and deer hunting at Flagtail Farm, his favorite place in Ehrhardt, South Carolina.
