John Michael (Mike) Addison, aged 80, the beloved husband of the late Mary Ellen Addison, passed away on January 4, 2024 at his residence in Anderson, South Carolina. Born on May 4, 1943 in Greenwood, SC, Mr. Addison was the son of the late Frank and Essie Addison. A graduate of Anderson Boys High School in 1961, he excelled in both track and football. His education continued at The Citadel, where he played football and earned his degree in 1965. Mr. Addison dedicated over 20 years to the United States Air Force, serving with honor during the Vietnam War. He also received a Master’s degree from the Air Command and Staff College in 1978, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His military service took him across the globe, including several years at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. In 1965, Mr. Addison married Mary Ellen Little, embarking on a life marked by devotion and shared adventures. Their enduring union blessed them with two children, Catherine and Scott. After retiring from the military, Mr. Addison worked for E-Systems as one of the leaders overseeing the Joint Defense Facility near Alice Springs, Australia. Returning to Anderson, he became an active member of the community, for a time leading the county chapter of the Democratic Party of Anderson County. A professor of political science at Anderson College (now Anderson University), he shared his passion for service and politics. Despite a distinguished career, Mr. Addison prioritized family, coaching his son’s sports teams, and attending every one of his football games and wrestling matches. His 57-year marriage to Mary Ellen was a testament to their deep affection and friendship, which continued until her passing in January 2022. Survivors include his son, Scott Michael Addison (Diane), and their children, Bridget Quinn Addison and Darcy Grace Addison, all of Harwich, MA; daughter, Catherine Anne Murchie (David) of Stamford, CT; sister, Frankie Pecha; nephew, Tony Campbell; niece, Jill Campbell Paules, all of Lakeland, FL. He is also remembered by his four devoted caregivers: Cathy Gray, who has been a treasured member of the family since joining them to care for his mother over 20 years ago; Connie Manley, Tishalla Brownlee, and Khadejah Gray. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 8, at New Silver Brook Cemetery.
