Georgiana DeMore Whitlock McNaughton, of Charleston, A gentle loving soul who exemplified serenity and accomplishments are some of the ways to describe our precious Georgiana, who went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, August 21, 2011, at the age of 90 years and 9 months. She was born in Charleston, SC on November 8, 1920, to Jesse DeMore and Sanna Holder DeMore. She attended school in Charleston and graduated from the College of Charleston, where she was the first SC initiate of the Phi Mu Sorority. Her life centered on her family, her church, and her love of learning and teaching. She received a Master’s Degree in Education from the Citadel after her children were grown, attesting to her love and regard of education. Generations of children were educated and prepared for life by her during her over 30 plus year teaching career. She loved her school children and prepared them well. They loved and respected her in return. Her grandchildren called her a wise woman who passed on wisdom that was pertinent in their lives. Her love of God and music were demonstrated by the fact that she was a church organist and choir director from the time she was 19 years old. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and was the organist and choir director for more than 20 years. She was loving and generous person, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Georgiana loved nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren and helping others. Her heart was always open and she gave generously to those she knew as well as to charitable causes. She particularly supported police charities since she had a son, son-in-law, 2 grandsons, and a grandson-in-law, all in local law enforcement. Her first husband Edward S. Whitlock, Sr. preceded her in death at the early age of 47. He was the father of her three surviving children, Edward S. Whitlock, Jr., Moncks Corner, SC; Anne Whitlock Googe, Summerville, SC; and Stephen N. Whitlock, Huger, SC. She later married John R. McNaughton, Sr.; who is also deceased. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Sanna DeMore; sisters, Carolyn deMori and Ottie (Tot) Cothran; brothers, Bob DeMore, and Jessie DeMore; son David Whitlock; and grandson Christopher Whitlock. Among the loved ones mourning her loss and daughters-in-law Jo Ann Whitlock, Sally Whitlock, Charlene Whitlock; son-in-law Robert Googe, grandchildren Robert Whitlock, Wendy Whitlock Carter, Robert Googe Jr., Sandy Googe Favero, Nicholas Whitlock, Sarah Whitlock Lewis, and 12 great grandchildren Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Carolina Memorial Gardens Chapel. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Gardens.
