Edward Hixon Copelan, 86, of Albany, died Thursday, August 4, 2011 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. His funeral service will be at 4 PM, Saturday, August 6, 2011 (Today) at Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Leigh Ann Raynor will officiate. Mr. Copelan was born in Greensboro, GA and moved to Albany in 1949. He graduated from Greensboro High School in 1942. He graduated from The Citadel in 1945, and was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Copelan began working with Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co. in 1947 and remained there until 1952. In 1952, he joined Walden and Kirkland Insurors and worked there for 17 years and became the firm’s President. He left Walden and Kirkland Insurors in 1969 and formed the Copelan Insurance Agency, Inc., retiring in 1999. Mr. Copelan was a member of Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church, the Fellowship Sunday School Class where he served as its President, Chairman of the Executive Board, and Chairman of the Administrative Board. He was a member of the Walter H. Burt American Legion Post 30, Executive Committee of the United Way, President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Albany, and a member of the Lions Club of Albany for 25 years. Mr. Copelan was preceded in death by his mother, Mamie Hixon Copelan, his father, Foster Pierce Copelan, his sister, Ann Barnett, and his grandson, Wesley Reynolds Benford. Mr. Copelan is survived by his wife: Barbara Reynolds Copelan, Albany; a son: Bill Copelan and his wife Vicki, Leesburg; 2 daughters: Laura Benford and her husband Ben, Albany, Cindy Copelan Mustoe, Marietta; 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Copelan residence at 2114 Robinhood Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church, 2200 Dawson Rd., Albany, GA 31707, the American Cancer Society, P.O.
