Douglas H. Cobb ’65

Douglas Henry ‘Doug’ Cobb, age 65, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2008 at his home in Fayetteville, Georgia from cancer. Doug was born on February 16, 1943 in Greenville, SC to George and Johnsie Cobb. The family, including brothers George and Charlie, moved to Rock Hill, SC in 1944 where Doug remained until he graduated from the Winthrop Training School in 1961. Doug enrolled at The Citadel later that year on a football scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1965. He was commissioned as an Officer in the United States Army upon graduation. Doug earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of Georgia in 1973, and embarked on a decorated career as a service man to the United States of America. Doug served 27 years in the military including combat assignments in Vietnam and Iraq where he served as the senior officer in charge of POWs and security for the entire Desert Storm operation, reporting directly to General Norman Schwarzkopf. During his distinguished military career, Doug earned the following decorations: Three Legions of Merit, Two Bronze Stars, Four Meritorious Service Medals, Three Army Commendation Medals, Two National Defense Service Medals and was an Airborne Jump Master. Doug retired from the US Army in 1993 at Fort McPherson, Georgia. Doug will be remembered most for his zest for life, engaging personality, southern charm, and booming bass in the Church Choir, most recently at Peachtree City United Methodist Church. Doug is survived by the love of his life, wife Susan of Fayetteville, GA; brother George, and wife Barbara of Taylors, SC; brother Charlie Cobb, and wife Joan of Columbia, SC; son Douglas Cobb, and wife Lisa, granddaughters Sara Beth and Anna Ruth of Moore, SC; son Brent Cobb, and wife Donna, granddaughter Reagan of Atlanta, GA; son Jonathan Cobb of Jacksonville, FL; daughter Terri Cobb of Atlanta, GA; nephew George Cobb Jr. of Lubbock, TX; niece Catherine Smith of Clinton, SC; nephew Nate Cobb of Houston, TX; step son Dr. Mathew Autera, wife Dr. Traci Autera; grandson Dylan and granddaughter Alexis; step daughter Natalie Weiss and husband Michael. Visitation will be Sunday, September 21, 2008 at Mowell Funeral Home in Peachtree City, GA from 6pm to 8pm www.mowellfuneralhome.com.
