Avel de la Garza Fernandez, age 37, of Gallatin, Tenn., passed away on Sunday, July 4, 2021. Avel was born in San Antonio, TX and was the son of Avelardo Muniz and Lucy Malacara de la Garza Fernandez. Mr. Fernandez is survived by his loving wife Sarah Pentecost Fernandez; daughters Emma Kate Fernandez, Mary Margaret Fernandez, and Lucia Rose Fernandez; baby Fernandez arriving January 2022; father Avelardo Fernandez; mother Lucy de la Garza Fernandez; brother Noel Fernandez (Nikki Montano); sisters Jessie Renee Fernandez, Midori Fernandez; grandmother Julia Malacara de la Garza; nieces Constance Fernandez and Anika Montano and many tios, tias, cousins, and a world of friends. A funeral mass for Mr. Fernandez will be held at 3pm on the afternoon Monday of July 12, 2021 at Our Lady of The Lake Catholic Church in Hendersonville with Father Gilstrap officiating. Interment will follow at Hendersonville Memory Gardens. Visitation for Avel will be held on the afternoon of Sunday, July 11, 2021 from 4-7pm at Hendersonville Funeral Home. Rosary will begin at 7pm. A visitation will also be held one hour prior to the start of the funeral mass. Avel loved gathering around the table enjoying a good meal and reminiscing together with his family. He also loved cooking with his wife, mowing the lawn with his daughters, enjoying family bike rides, and the occasional “night cap.” He also had rainbow slippers that he had since high school which always traveled with him. He refused to have thrown them away. Avel was very talented. For example, he played the trumpet and knew how to sew. His Citadel buddies laughed because he sewed his own pants hems! He even learned how to embroider Ninja Turtles. Avel earned the 1st Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do style karate. Avel loved Sarah’s cooking. He himself loved making salsas, smoked pizza, and his favorite smoked brisket.
