Wash grew up in and attended school in St. Stephen, SC where his colorful and creative life began. He was a tap dancer and was the quarterback of his high school football team. He got caught racing school buses with an unnamed cousin and played in a steel drum band. In high school, he added his own unscripted creative flair to a school play’s final scene, involving a dead bird and a track starting gun; a moment so memorable it has been retold for decades.
He was a proud 1965 graduate of The Citadel. As a young husband and father, he was called to ministry. He started his ministry in Grover, SC and eventually completed his Masters of Divinity and Doctorate of Ministry from Erskine Theological Seminary. Wash served as a pastor in The United Methodist Church for 44 years. In his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and playing drums in a jazz band. He was compassionate and funny and a story-teller extraordinaire.
