H. Earl “Bud” Singletary Jr., 59 years of age, of Albemarle, passed away Monday morning, January 25, 2016, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Bud was born on July 20, 1956, to Betty H. Singletary of Lexington, SC, and the late H. Earl Singletary Sr. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Tamara McSwain Singletary and children, Lauren N. Singletary and David E. Singletary of Albemarle. He is also survived by his sister, Rhonda S. deGategno (Paul deGategno) of West Chester, PA, father-in-law and mother-in-law Kenneth and Shelby McSwain of Norwood, and brother-in-law Todd McSwain (Carla McSwain) of Norwood. He is survived by two nieces, Martha McSwain and Kathleen deGategno, and two nephews, Duncan McSwain and Patrick deGategno (Karen deGategno and daughter Alex deGategno). The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2016, at Stanly Funeral Home-Albemarle. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Central United Methodist Church-Albemarle Saturday, January 30, 2016, at 2 p.m., officiated by Rev. Innocent Justice and Rev. Marilyn Wooten. Bud graduated from The Citadel as a member of the Class of 1978 before serving as a member of the United States Marine Corps. Following military service, he earned a Juris Doctorate degree at Campbell College School of Law. He practiced law in Stanly County for more than 30 years. He was currently a partner of the law firm Singletary and Webster PC. He was a committed member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, Norwood, where he served as chairman of the administrative council, taught Sunday school, and was a member of the Men’s Club. He was a member of the Stanly Masonic Lodge No. 348 and served as a Councilor for the North Carolina State Bar Association representing Judicial District 20A. One of Bud’s many professional accomplishments was his instrumental help in founding Gray Stone Day School, located on the campus of Pfeiffer University. He has served on its Board of Directors since the school’s inception and as its chairman since 2004. In 2009 he received the Gray Stone Day School Board of Directors’ Scholarship Honoree award. One of Bud’s goals was to leave a lasting legacy with the School, and he worked tirelessly to ensure its success. This legacy: his vision, commitment and passion for Gray Stone shall continue to lay the foundation for all of its students, teachers and staff.
