Jay Walter Bliss, Jr., 83, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, died on October 12, 2009 in a local nursing home after a short illness. He was born on November 23, 1925, in Springfield, Vermont, to the late Jay and Edith Bliss. Jay served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He graduated from N.C. State University School of Textiles and later received an MBA from the Citadel. He earned the Eagle Scout Award in Boy Scouts and later served as a Scoutmaster of a troop. He was a lifelong Mason, receiving his 50 year pin several years ago and was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Marden Bliss; three daughters, Catherine Townsend and husband Danny Burbage of Summerville, Beverly Cummings and husband Tim Cummings of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Carolina Koger and husband William Koger of Hampton; four grandchildren, Lee Bliss Burbage, Timothy Jay Cummings, Sarah Elizabeth Koger and Rebecca Gayton Koger. He was preceded in death by his son, Jay Walter Bliss, III. A Memorial Service will be held at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 9110 Dorchester Rd., Summerville, SC, on Friday, October 16, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation with family will follow the service. His ashes will buried at the family cemetery lot in Tryon, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to: Grandfather Home for Children, Banner Elk, NC, 28604.
