The Citadel Alumni Association Contributes to Scholarships

The Citadel Alumni Association capped off a banner year of giving at its annual membership meeting. The Association will contribute $900,000 to support college operations, CAA legacy cadet and need-based scholarships, and enhance The Citadel’s Service to Country Tuition Scholarships and National Service Room and Board Scholarships for ROTC cadets.

LTG William P. Tangney, USA, Ret., '67

Tangney spent his 35-year distinguished military career in Special Operations.  He saw service in Vietnam with the Army's Special Forces (MACV-SOG-CCS). 

Tangney commanded at all levels of the Special Operations community, including Commanding General, Special Operations Central Command; Commanding General, US Army JFK Special Warfare Center and School; Commander-in-Chief, US Army Special Operations Command; and Deputy Commander-in-Chief US Special Operations Command. He retired from the U.S. Army in November 2002. 

Tangney's military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star with V, the Bronze Star with 2 oak leaf clusters and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.

  • "One of the greatest snowstorms in Southeastern United States history occurred February 9-11, 1973.  This storm dropped one to two feet of snow across a region that typically sees only an inch or two of snow per year.  New all-time snowfall records were established in a number of locations including Rimini, SC with 24 inches; 18 inches in Darlington, SC; and 16.5 inches in Macon, GA.  Snowfall in Wilmington, NC reached 12.5 inches with 7.1 inches recorded in Charleston." - weather.gov

  • The late Colonel Louis S. LeTellier, SCM, was born on February 8, 1887. 

He joined The Citadel faculty in 1908 as professor of drawing and in 1920 became the head of the Department of Civil Engineering, which received accreditation by the Engineers Council for Professional Development in 1939. LeTellier was appointed Acting President of The Citadel upon the retirement of General Charles P. Summerall in 1953. When General Mark W. Clark became President, LeTellier was appointed Dean of the college. He retired May 1, 1954, ending 46 years of service to the college. 

LeTellier was the father of former CAA President, the late MG Carroll LeTellier, USA, Ret., '49.
