Robert R. Hill, Jr., '88

Robert Hill retired in 2020 as Chief Executive Officer of South State Corporation, a bank holding company serving communities across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. During his distinguished career, he held several key leadership roles, including President and Chief Operating Officer. In 2011, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond’s Charlotte Branch.

Businessweek recognized Hill as one of just 98 CEOs under age 40 in the United States — and one of 140 worldwide — leading publicly traded companies on the NASDAQ or New York Stock Exchange, a rare and prestigious distinction among his peers.

Hill said, “The Citadel adopted me when I was a 17-year-old kid; it made me a man and taught me what leadership was all about. The Citadel was certainly the right road for me and has made all the difference in my life, and I could not be more proud to be a Citadel Man.”
