William Young Smith, 63, died March 17, 2011 in Jacksonville, Fla. He was born May 29, 1947 in Athens, Ga. He graduated in 1965 from Winter Haven High School and received his undergraduate degree in 1969 from the Citadel in Charleston, S.C. He then obtained a MBA from the University of Georgia in 1972 and later served in the United States Air Force. During his time in Asheville he served on numerous community boards. He was employed by Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Affiliated of Asheville, until 1986 when he became a McDonald’s franchise owner-operator. In 1989 he moved to Knoxville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Smith. He is survived by his mother, Alexa Smith. He leaves his wife, Laura Hughes Smith; a son, Robert H. Smith; two daughters, Allison Stanly and Jennifer Dent; and his children’s spouses, Kathleen Smith, William Stanly, and Andrew Dent. He also leaves his nine grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Carl Smith; and a sister, Jessalyn Stone. He loved being with his grandchildren and family. He was an avid collector of antique English porcelain and enjoyed spending time in England. He also enjoyed football and fishing. A memorial service will be held on March 24, 2011 at 11 A.M. at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian, 72 Long Shoals Road, Arden, NC 28704.
