Funeral services for William Thomas White, 83, of Valhermoso Springs, AL, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Charles Owens officiating. Burial will be in Valhermoso Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. White was born June 1, 1926, in Scranton, S.C., to Furman Thomas White and Elma McCutcheon White. He passed away Nov. 25, 2009, at Floyd E. (Tut) Fann Veterans Nursing Home in Huntsville. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946. He was the grandson of the late Herman William White. He was preceded in death by his parents, Furman and Elma White, and one brother, Furman Murphy White. He was educated in Florence County schools in South Carolina. He received a BS degree in electrical engineering from the Citadel in 1950. He worked in the Charleston, S.C., Naval Ship Yard. In 1954, he moved to Huntsville, where he went to work with NASA in Astrionics, where he worked on missile guided systems, which included the Redstone, Jupiter, and the Saturn 5 Program. He retired from NASA in 1974 and went back to his farm in Valhermoso Springs, where he raised Charlaie Cattle. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elsie McCutchen White of Valhermoso Springs; one son, Thomas Russell White and wife Mary Sandusky of Priceville; one daughter, Donna White and husband Russell Chunn of Valhermoso Springs; one brother, Richard Devon White and wife Betty of Charleston; one sister, Mary Lou Matthews of Scranton; and five grandchildren, Emily White, Will White, Matthew Chunn and wife Sherry, Wesley Chunn, and Austin Chunn. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Parkinson Foundation or Shiloh Baptist Church. Tags: 1950
