William R. “Choppy” Morris, Jr, 76, of Mount Pleasant, entered into eternal rest on Friday, September 1, 2023. His funeral service will be held at All Saints Lutheran Church, 2107 N. Hwy. 17, Mt. Pleasant, SC, at 11:00 am with a reception to follow. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel. Choppy was born on April 4, 1947. in Charleston, SC, the son of the late William R. Morris, Sr. and Alice Climer Morris. Choppy was a 1965 graduate of Chicora High School where he was a highly decorated athlete in basketball, football, and baseball. He would attend the Citadel as a baseball and basketball player and graduate in 1969. He was a member of the 1967 Citadel basketball team that was relived through Pat Conroy’s, My Losing Season. Choppy also played competitive golf, ping pong, pool, and even marbles as there was not a sport Choppy could not master. Many wonderful memories have been retold over the years involving Choppy Morris on a court or a field. Choppy would spend the next 20+ years in southern California developing his construction skills that would benefit so many of us in the years to come. Choppy married Susan Strauss in 1996 and has three stepchildren, Tiffany Moye (Tripp), Ty DuPree (Denise), and Terry DuPree (Angie). Choppy constantly reminded people his biggest accomplishment in life was having the opportunity to experience being a grandad. He was affectionately known to so many as “Boppy”, especially to his ten grandchildren – Mary Elizabeth, Madeline, Matthew IV Moye; Cullen, Brock, Ashton, Chase, Stevie, Mary Alice, and Rosalie DuPree. Choppy was an ever-present fixture at all the kid’s recitals, swim meets, birthday parties, basketball and soccer games. He will always be remembered as someone who gave so much to so many, especially to his family. Choppy’s smile and presence will be so missed on the sidelines and in the bleachers. Choppy was preceded in death by his parents and best friend and brother-in-law, Carl H. Rourk, Sr. He is survived by sisters, Marion Rzepkowski (Ronnie) and Betty Jean Rourk; nephew and nieces, Carl Rourk, III (Katy); Debra Bruan (David), Ray Rzepkowski (Debbie), Cindy Rzepkowski, Cathey Massey (Jim), and Chelsea Rzepkowski. Choppy leaves behind many friends, especially his long-time friend, Buddy Beard. Memorials can be made in his honor to the Citadel Brigadier Foundation (69 Hagood Avenue, Charleston, SC 29403).
