William R. ”Red” Alford, 65, died Thursday, May 29, 2003. A native of Canton, Miss., Mr. Alford was a son of the late Clayton and Pennington Alford. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics from The Citadel, Charleston, S.C., a doctorate in mathematics from Tulane University, New Orleans, La., and a law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law. He had served on the UGA mathematics faculty, practiced law in Athens and returned to the university mathematics faculty, retiring in 2002. The body was cremated. No services are planned at this time. Survivors include his daughter, Kira Alford, Louisville, Ky.; two brothers, Eddie Alford, Michigan, and Dwight Alford, North Carolina; and a grandson. Memorials may be made to the B.J. Ball Scholarship Fund at the UGA Foundation. Funeral Options and Cremation Society of Kentucky, Louisville, Ky., had charge of arrangements.
