William M. Morrison, Jr., ’48

William McG. Morrison, of Charleston, died peacefully at his home on August 14 surrounded by his family. His funeral service will be Friday, August 18, 2017 in St. Philip’s Church at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the churchyard. There will be a visitation Thursday at the Carolina Yacht Club from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. “Bo” was born in 1927, the son of Caroline Sams Morrison and former Charleston Mayor William McG. Morrison. He was married to the former Felicia Weston Howell of Columbia for 65 years and was the brother of Henrietta Morrison Lowndes and the late John Earle Morrison. Bo attended public schools and graduated from the High School of Charleston in 1944. He attended The Citadel first as a cadet and later as a veteran student. Bo attended the University of South Carolina and graduated from Stetson University School of Law in 1950, after which he practiced law in Charleston with a very active client base until his retirement in 1988. Upon turning 18, Bo enlisted in the Navy and served in the Amphibious Forces until his release from active service, after which he returned to The Citadel. He was recalled to active duty in the Korean Conflict, received a commission, and served on the aircraft carrier Boxer in Korea as an intelligence officer. After Korea Bo returned to Charleston to practice law. He retired from the Navy Reserves at the rank of Captain. During his thirty-eight years of law practice Bo specialized in personal injury, criminal work and general practice. He was involved in a number of cases that attracted public attention. Bo was a past president of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association and a board member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He was active in political matters and served as Treasurer for Senator Ernest F. Hollings, both in his senatorial campaign and his presidential campaign. Bo was active in civic and fraternal organizations. He served as secretary of the Charleston County Aviation Authority for 12 years, president of the Preservation Society of Charleston, president of the YMCA of Charleston, chairman of the St. James-Santee “Brick Church” Restoration Committee, and vice-chairman of the Charles Pinckney Historical Site. He was president of Catfish Row Company that sponsored a successful production of the Gershwin/Heyward opera Porgy and Bess for the benefit of several local non-profit organizations. Bo was also secretary of the Society of the Cincinnati of South Carolina and a member of the Carolina Yacht Club, Yeamans Hall Club, the Society of Colonial Wars, the South Carolina Society, the Hibernian Society, the St. Andrews Society, and the New England Society. He also served as president of the Colony Club at High Hampton in Cashiers, NC. Bo was an avid sailor since his boyhood, a co-founder and commodore of the Charleston Ocean Racing Association, and a former member of the New York Yacht Club. Bo is survived by his wife Felicia, and their four children: William Howell Morrison and his wife Erwin; James Hagood Sams Morrison and his wife Mary; Dr. Edward Chisolm Morrison and his wife Dr. Sarah Dolven; and Felicia Chisolm Morrison Huger and her husband William E. Huger, III, of Atlanta, together with thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Bo’s family is especially grateful for the many decades of devoted friendship and service of Ms. Geneva Robinson in addition to the warm care and attention in the final stages of his life from Danny Dandridge, Margaret Kunes and Elizabeth McDermott and their skilled care-givers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. James-Santee “Brick Church” Restoration Committee, P.O. Box 388, Awendaw, SC 29429 or to St. Philip’s Church, 142 Church St. Charleston, 29401. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston
