Colonel William Leslie McKay (Bill) a proud veteran of the Army, beloved husband of 64 years and father, grandfather, and friend, of Richmond, Va., passed away 11/13/2024 of natural causes at 93 years old.
The son of Cecelia Swain McKay and Robert Clement McKay, Bill grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. He was born 12/30/1930 and attended Saint Andrews High School, class of 1948. He attended The Citadel, graduating class of 1953.
Bill is survived by his wife Ann Marie McKay, his son, Bill Jr., and daughter Alison McKay Owens. His daughter, Robin McKay, passed away in 1987. His five grandchildren, Derrick Owens, Robin Owens, Mia Owens, Kimberly Owens, and Dylan McKay will dearly miss him.
Having served in the South Carolina National Guard and U.S. Army for over 30 years, he valued this service highly and attained the rank of Colonel. He served in the occupation forces in Germany post World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam War, and spent time at the Pentagon.
A celebration honoring the life of William McKay will be held on 11/26/2024 at 12:00 pm at Stella Maris Catholic Church, 1204 Middle Street, Sullivan’s Island, 29482.
