KallamSr.,WilliamLeeBill GREENVILLE KALLAM GREENVILLE, S.C. – William Lee Bill Kallam Sr., 84, of 401 Huntington Road, Greenville, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007. Born March 8, 1923, he was a son of the late Fletcher Lee and Beulah Shepard Kallam of Winston-Salem, N.C. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Patricia L.Kallam; and his brother, Ted S. Shelton. Along with his beloved brother, Ted, Bill was the popular owner of the Little Pigs Restaurant on Pleasantburg Drive for over 35 years. Bill was a graduate of The Citadel. During World War II, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and was a B-24 bomber pilot. Every March 14, he would quietly celebrate Bail Out Day. This day is the anniversary of his escape from his B-24 that was damaged by enemy artillery over Nove Zamke, Czechoslovakia. Bill piloted his wounded plane back into friendly territory in Yugoslavia where he bailed out after the other nine members of his crew had done so. After the war, Bill was a member of the Air Force Reserves and was commissioned as a captain. He continued his love of flying throughout his life and piloted airplanes well into his 80s. Surviving are his daughter, Julie Kallam Turner, and her husband, Billy, of Travelers Rest; his daughter, Ann Kallam Ashmore, and her husband, Durant, and their son William Kallam Ashmore, of Fountain Inn; his sister-in-law, Laura Kallam; and nephews Tim and David Kallam. His son, William Lee Kallam Jr., also died on Nov. 10, 2007. A gathering of friends and family will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at The Mackey Mortuary in Greenville. The family wishes to thank all of Bill’ s flying friends at the Downtown Airport for all their support throughout the years. Special consideration is given to friends and neighbors A.B. and Tim Stewart for all their love and devotion to Bill over the years and to the R.O.M.E.O. club for their friendship and support.
