Bill Durham of Irvington, Va., died July 1.
Bill Durham was born in Georgia, grew up in North Carolina and graduated from The Citadel. A true southern gentleman, he had a distinguished career in the Army Corps of Engineers, including two wars and retired with honors in 1976.
With his wife, Arden, and two children, he lived and traveled all around the world, continuing to work as an engineer and diplomat.
Finally, he retired again, moving the family to the Northern Neck and building a home on Prentice Creek, settling down to golf at Indian Creek Golf Club, especially the 19th hole, Master Gardening and becoming a passionate naturalist.
He was very proud of his two children; Bill with a bachelor’s from University of North Carolina and a law degree from University of Virginia, and his daughter Mikel, with a bachelor’s from Smith College and an MBA from Harvard. He was an amazing “Grampum” to his four grandchildren, Sophie, Alex, Burkit and Arden. The family will always remember his amazing sense of humor.
Eventually he and Arden moved again to RWC and their family had grown to include an adored “Pound Pup” and a not so adorable “Pound Cat.” They will be a lot of company and comfort to Arden. The family is grateful to RWC for their caring assistance and to Hospice of Virginia for their help.
Bill passed away on July 1, just past his 89th birthday and 60th wedding anniversary.
A memorial celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 2 p.m. July 17 at RWC.
