Lt. Colonel (Ret) William J. Dwyer Jr., passed away Saturday, August 23, 2014. He was born in New York City to William and Sarah Dwyer on June 3, 1937.
‘Bill’ lived in NYC and Hialeah, FL where he graduated from Archbishop Curley HS. He then attended the prestigious Military College of SC, The Citadel, Class of 1960.
During his 20 years in the Army, Bill served in many locations, including Germany and two combat tours in Vietnam where he received the Purple Heart. He attended the War College and taught Military Science and Tactics at the University of VA.
Upon his return to civilian life, Bill served another 20 years with the Department of Defense at Ft. Meade, MD and Ft Gillem, GA as the Regional Supervisor in the Southeast for the US ROTC Program.
While enjoying a well earned retirement in Dunnellon, FL with his loving wife Michele, the latent head wounds of war emerged into a five year battle with Parkinson’s disease. Bill passed away with a soldier’s dignity. He will be forever remembered by his family and friends for his integrity, his strength, his wisdom and his sense of humor.
Preceded in death by his parents and his older brother Lawrence; he is survived by his wife Michele; a son, William ‘BJ’ Dwyer III; three daughters, Lauren Smith, Erin Filippone, Valerie Dunlap-Birdsell; his younger brother, Denis Dwyer; nine grandchildren; and a niece and a nephew.
A Requiem Mass will be held at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church located at 6455 S.W. State Rd 200 in Ocala, FL at 8:30 am on Tuesday, September 16, 2014. In lieu of flowers, a contribution in his memory can be made to the National Parkinson’s Foundation.
