William Hubbard Cain, MD, of James Island, husband of Julia Bethea Cain, died February 10, 2018 at his home on James Island. Born in Charleston on December 19, 1928, Dr. Cain was the youngest son of Francis Gendron Cain, MD and Parham Atkins Cain. William was a 1948 graduate of the Citadel and graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1952. Following his internship he served in the U.S. Army as a battalion surgeon in Germany. After his completion of military service he returned to Charleston and completed 5 years as a surgical resident. He was in the private practice of surgery until 1992 when he joined the Veterans Administration and worked in Danville, Il. and Fayetteville, NC. Upon retirement in 1996 he returned to Charleston and worked as a medical consultant for Social Security Disability until 2013, when he finally retired at the age of 85. William is survived by his wife, Julia, of 37 years, his daughters Parham M.. Cain and Susalee Cain Spruill and step-son, John A. Dunn, III and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter. Eleanor Cain Stutler and his brothers Francis G. Cain, Jr. and James R. Cain, M.D.. Services will be held at St. Philip’s Church in Charleston on Saturday, February 17. In lieu of flowers memorials to the Episcopal Church Home for Children, 234 Kings Mountain St., York, SC 29745 or to the Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Rd., Charleston, SC 29406 will be appreciated.
