William E. Plyler, Sr., ’50

William Elliott Plyler Sr., 90, of Kershaw, beloved father, grandfather and adored husband, died on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016.
Born in Columbia on Feb. 3, 1926, he was the son of the late William Hazel and Melita Cook Plyler. He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Nannie Louise Williams Plyler.
He is survived by three sons, four grandchildren, his sister and several nieces and nephews. His sons are Dr. William E. Plyler Jr. (Frances) of Columbia, Dr. John Williams Plyler (Thomas) of Mount Pleasant and Gary Charles Plyler (Holly) of Summerville. His grandchildren are Layna A. Plyler, Annalee B. Plyler, Jackson E. Plyler and J. Hampton Plyler. His sister is Evelyn Plyler Carpenter (Keith) of Hilton Head.
Mr. Plyler grew up in Kershaw; graduated from Kershaw High School; and married his childhood sweetheart Nannie, daughter of the late Perry and Nina Gardner Williams, on Aug. 12, 1949.
After serving in World War II in the U.S. Navy as a radar specialist receiving commendations for initiative and proficiency in performance of duties, Elliott completed his degree at The Citadel in December 1949, and he later completed a MBA at the University of South Carolina. The couple returned to Kershaw after his Citadel graduation, where Elliott spent over 25 years working in planning management and cost accounting with Kendall Company in Bethune, while Nannie enjoyed a long teaching career at Flat Creek Elementary.
Elliott was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Kershaw and the Fallow Sunday school class. He was active in the church serving on committees, as an usher and as a deacon. He served on the church’s building committee and chaired the special project to further develop and construct Sunday school classrooms, youth education program facilities and gymnasium. Completion of the Ministry Center was a labor of love and one of his proudest accomplishments.
Elliott and Nannie loved their hometown community Kershaw. Elliott supported sports from his days playing football on The Kershaw Eagles Team to serving as Andrew Jackson Booster Club President. Through the years, he participated in many clubs and community activities including Lion’s Club, Toastmasters, Spring-a-thon, Lancaster County Roads Commission and served several terms as president of Kershaw Rotary Club.
He adored his wife and family – you could not say Elliott without saying Nan. He also loved golf, and his smile and quick wit could often be experienced at Kershaw Golf Club.
In later years, he was a faithful caregiver to Nannie throughout her prolonged illness. Elliott’s steadfast dedication and care and Nannie’s loving smile both inspired and warmed the hearts of many who shared these last years.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 16, at Baker Funeral Home Chapel, with burial immediately following in the Kershaw City Cemetery. The Rev. Bryant D. Fersner will officiate.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank Mrs. Betty Beckham and the many other caregivers for the support shown to Mr. and Mrs. Plyler. Special appreciation is also extended to the Sunday school classes and the many friends who continually provided support with calls, visits and letters.
Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Plyler may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 67, Kershaw, SC 29067.
Baker Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Plyler.
