Mr. William Duncan Hawkins Jr., 77, of Winston-Salem died Friday, May 28, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Sept. 25, 1926, in North Charleston, S.C., to William Duncan Hawkins and Ursula Ballance Hawkins. Mr. Hawkins was a graduate of the Citadel with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He was a lifetime member of the Association of Citadel Men and Citadel Alumni Association. During World War II, he was a U.S. Naval TBM Avenger Torpedo plane air crewman and a portion of his service was spent in the South Pacific. Mr. Hawkins retired from AT&T and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and a member of Burkhead United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Hawkins of the home; a daughter, Linda Hawkins Witmer and husband Ray and their children, Nathan and Rachel of Springfield, Va.; a son, William D. Hawkins III and wife Connie and their children, Katie and Andrew, of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Diane Hawkins Brown and husband Bryan and their son, Chapp, of Apex; two sisters, Ursula Hawkins Martin and Elizabeth Hawkins Ilderton, both of North Charleston, S.C.; and two brothers, Levin Andre Hawkins of Belvedere, S.C., and Edward Phillip Hawkins of Green Pond, S.C. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at Riverview Memorial Park in North Charleston, S.C., by the Rev. Kathie Sherrill. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the cemetery. Memorials may be made to Burkhead United Methodist Church, 5250 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
