William Armstrong Leffler, III (73) of Tallahassee, FL, and Blairsville, GA, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2018 at the Big Bend Hospice House in Tallahassee. Friends affectionately knew him as “Bill”. He was born on February 11, 1945 as the first child of Mary and William A. Leffler, Jr. He grew up in Sanford, FL and graduated from Seminole High School in 1963. He attended college at The Citadel, Military College of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. As a cadet at the Citadel, he studied civil engineering and “wore the ring” as a graduate of the Class of 1967. Bill would later graduate from the Stetson College of Law in 1974. Working in both the public and private sectors, Bill had a distinguished career as a civil engineer and attorney. He was admitted to the Florida Bar and the United States Supreme Court Bar. He was also a board certified Professional Engineer. Bill was a lifetime supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. As a youth, his fondest memories included summers spent at camp La-No-Chee, a trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, and attending the 1960 National Boy Scout Jamboree in Colorado Springs. Later, Bill continued to serve the scouting community for more than 20 years as an adult leader in Troop 105. In 2006, the Suwannee River Area Council recognized Mr. Leffler by awarding him the Silver Beaver for his impact on the lives of youths through his distinguished service to the council. The Boy Scouts provided Bill an opportunity to reconnect with the joys of his youth and to encourage young men and women to live lives of adventure, personal development, civic engagement and virtue. For many years, Bill was a member of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Tallahassee and was involved with Kairos Prison Ministry. He was a loving and companionate man who was always willing to assist, counsel, and mentor those experiencing challenges in their lives. His message was always one of perseverance, resilience and hope. In his final days he demonstrated the resolve of his message to his family, friends and caregivers. In retirement, Bill, his wife Cathy and their magical dog Merlin moved to Blairsville, GA. There they enjoyed the north Georgia mountains and found adventure in travel. They completed numerous road trips including visiting nearly all of the western national parks. Their adventures continued on a recent cruise that included transiting the Panama Canal. Last October, Bill attended his 50th class reunion at Citadel in Charleston, SC. Bill is survived by Cathy, his loving and caring wife of 23 years; his children, Michael (Emilly), Kelly, and Cindy; treasured granddaughters, Amelia and Katlyn; brother, Charles (Laura) Leffler of Ormond Beach; sister, Mary Cummings of Safety Harbor; aunts, Martha “Mot” Wight of Highlands NC, and Lila Walling of Charlotte FL; stepchildren, Arthur “D.J.” (Denise), Russell “Rusty” (Wil), and Jill (Tim); Mr. Leffler eleven nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary; uncle, the Hon. Kenneth Leffler of New Smyrna; sister, Susan Iwaniw of Deltona; brother, Thomas Vincent “Vince” Leffler of Sanford. A celebration of life will be held on April 14, 2018. Details of the time and location will be announced on a future date. In lieu of flowers, the Leffler family asks that everyone “Do a good turn daily.” The Leffler family encourages charitable giving to your local BSA Council, Kairos Prison Ministry, The Citadel Alumni Association and Big Bend Hospice. Susie Mozolic of Bevis Funeral Home is assisting the family with their arrangements. ( www.bevisfh.com 850-385-2193)
