Dr. Wiley “Buddy” Turner III, of Edgefield, died April 16, 2023. He was born in Augusta, Georgia on February 26, 1935, to Gladys Lyon Turner and Wiley H. Turner, Jr. of Edgefield, South Carolina. He was a graduate of Edgefield High School and a graduate of The Citadel Class of 1957. He attended the Medical University of South Carolina School of Medicine from which he graduated in June of 1961. In September of 1961 he married Rebecca Wallace from Trio, South Carolina. In 1962 after completing an internship at Greenville General Hospital, he was inducted into the United States Army where he served two years as Captain at the Pentagon (during the Cuban Crisis). In 1964 he and Dr. B.E. Nicholson opened the Edgefield Medical Clinic where they and partner Dr. George Rainsford engaged in a life-long friendship as well as their chosen practice of Family Practice Medicine. Dr. Turner served as Deacon of Edgefield First Baptist Church for years, was a former member of the American Medical Association, and a former President of the Edgefield County Hospital Board of Trustees which he and Dr. Nicholson were instrumental in bringing to Edgefield County.
He is survived by his loving and much-loved family of his wife, two sons Wiley H. IV and James Andrew, their wives, Ann and Becky whom he loved as daughters, grandchildren Drew and his wife Caroline, Margaret and her husband Garrett (Dorn), Sarah and her husband Clark (Batchelder), Wiley H. Turner V., and Kristin and her husband Charner (Boney) and three great grandsons, Ben Boney, Jack Batchelder and Nathan Boney. He is survived also by nephews Daniel, Joel, and Rankin Jolly and their families.
Dr. Turner was predeceased by his parents and only sibling, Margaret Sue Jolly. To his family he left behind a legacy of great and abiding love, integrity, ambition and the eternal love of God, County and Fellow Man.
He was the Best of Husband, Father and Grandfather. There has been no greater earthly love than his love for his family – especially those Grandchildren!
The family will receive friends from 12:00pm-1:30pm at the fellowship hall of Edgefield First Baptist Church on Thursday, April 20th, 2023. The service will immediately follow at 2:00pm.
