Whaley Rivers (Buddy) Hinnant, Jr., DDS, 83, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Sharon Ellis Hinnant, entered into eternal rest Saturday, July 4, 2015. His funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2015, in Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt Street, at 1:00 p.m. Interment, Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Whaley was born August 28, 1931 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Whaley Rivers Hinnant and the late Agnes Limehouse Hinnant. He graduated from the High School of Charleston in 1949. He was a graduate of The Citadel, Class of 1953, where he played trumpet in the band and sang in the choir, and received his DDS degree from Emory University School of Dentistry in 1956. Whaley served two years in the U.S. Navy and practiced dentistry in the Charleston area for over 50 years. He was a former member and past president of the Charleston Dental Society, the Coastal District Dental Society, and the SC State Board of Dentistry. Whaley was a lifelong member of the American and SC Dental Association, Dental Missionary to Haiti seven times, a former member and charter president of the Rotary Club of Charleston Breakfast, a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow, recipient of the Rotary Foundation District Service Award and recipient of Rotarian of the Year. He was a lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist Church, sang in the Bethel Chancel Choir for over 60 years, was former Chair of Trustees, and Chair of Church Council. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Sharon, of Charleston; daughter, Lynn Hinnant Richmond (Michael) of Charleston, SC; step-daughter, Betsy Crouch Uddin (Aaron) of Atlanta, GA; step-son, Dr. Timothy Ellis Crouch (Susan) of Florence, SC; and step-grandsons: Harrison, Bennett and Brock Crouch. He was preceded in death by his son, Whaley Rivers Hinnant, III.
