Wayne A. Cline, Sr., ’44

Dr. Wayne Allen Cline, age 90, died after a long illness at Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem, on Oct. 26, 2013. Born in Greensboro on Jan. 7, 1923, Dr. Cline was the oldest son of Harvey and Nell Groome Cline. After graduating from the Citadel in 1944, Dr. Cline completed his medical training at the University of Virginia and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Upon completion of his Urological Residency, Dr. Cline headed to front line duty in the Korean War. There he joined the staff of the 11th Evacuation Hospital Unit. He completed his military service with a six month term at Tokyo General Hospital where he was Chief of Urological Services. In 1953 he joined Dr. John Frazier and Dr. Norris Erb in the Salisbury Urological Clinic. During his tenure at the clinic he became a nationally recognized leader in the surgical treatment of benign prostatic disease. He retired from the Salisbury Urological Clinic in 1987. During the course of his career, he was active in many local, state and national medical and urological associations. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American Urological Association and the Southeast Section of the AUA. He was past president of the Rowan Medical Society, the North and South Carolina Urological Associations, as well as the Southern Society of Urological Surgeons. In 1977, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for his service as the head of the Bowman Gray School of Medicine Alumni Association. Dr. Cline’s lifelong passion was medicine and he felt that the delivery of high quality healthcare was as important as his surgical skills. He served as Chief of Staff of Rowan Regional Medical Center and was the first physician to become Chairman of the Rowan Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees. It was under his leadership and generosity that Rowan Memorial Hospital grew to become Rowan Regional Medical Center serving an even larger area of Rowan and surrounding counties. He was a long time member of the Methodist Church in Salisbury. He loved golf, sailing, windsurfing and water skiing. He is survived by his wife, Deane; two children: a daughter, Deborah Isbister and her husband Dave of Winston-Salem; a son, Wayne A. Cline, Jr. and his wife Christy of Salisbury; and two granddaughters, Holly Kent Hollar and her husband Aaron of Nashville, Tenn., and Elizabeth Piper Cline of New York, N.Y. He was predeceased by his brother John. The family wishes to thank the staff of Arbor Acres of Winston-Salem and Patricia Wayne of Salisbury for their loving care during his difficult illness. Service: A memorial service will be held at The First United Methodist Church in Salisbury on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. followed by a reception at the home of Christy and Wink Cline. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Rowan Helping Ministries, 226 N. Long St., Salisbury, NC; The First United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 217 S. Church St., Salisbury, NC 28144; or David Kent Isbister Fund for the Benefit of the Williams Center, Senior Services, Inc., 2895 Shorefair Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27105. Summersett Funeral Home in Salisbury is assisting the family. Tags: 1944
