Warren H. (Sandy) Anderson, 78, of Charlotte, NC, known to many of you as “Andy,” died of cancer on Friday, December 27, 2013. Sandy was born in Evanston, IL on October 23, 1935, the son of the late William Anderson and Carol McKeown Anderson. He graduated from The Citadel in 1960, with a B.S. in Business Administration, having served as Regimental Commander and Editor-in-Chief of The Guideon among other honors. Sandy also earned a M.A. in International Relations from Boston University, and a M.S. in Administration from George Washington University. Sandy was a career officer in the U.S. Army. He served in the 3rd Infantry Regiment at Fort McNair, the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, the 3rd Armored Division in Germany, NATO Headquarters in Belgium, and in Korea. He also served in Vietnam from 1967-68 under the 5th Special Forces, and was awarded a Silver Star for gallantry in action, among other medals. He retired from the military with the rank of Lt. Colonel having also worked as a speechwriter at the Pentagon, writing for then President Gerald Ford, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and three Secretaries of the Army. Subsequently he was a corporate and consultant writer. Sandy was an avid tennis player and enjoyed writing, computers and guitar. He also enjoyed teaching, writing poetry and serving as an editorial writer for The Charlotte Observer. Survivors include his wife, Jean Anderson; son, Scott Anderson and wife, Holly; daughter, Connie Furr and husband, Tim; grandchildren, Ross and Charlotte Anderson and Jamie Furr; stepsons, Thomas and Don Dibert; stepdaughter, Laura Dean; step grandchildren, Kate and Stephanie Dibert, Don Dibert, II, Jacob Dibert, M.J. and Sydney Dean. A service to celebrate Sandy’s life was held on December 29, 2013, in the chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, in Charlotte, and he will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery.
