Visitation will be Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at 1 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection with funeral services at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Oddfellows Cemetery in Starkville. The Rev. Brian Ponder will officiate. Mr. Hillen was born in Charleston, S.C., to Walter R. Hillen and Helen Melchers Hillen. He was a graduate of Military College of South Carolina (The Citadel) and served in the United States Air Force in World War II. He was a professional engineer by training and worked with several local engineering and construction companies. He was a long time communicant of The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection where he served several times as a delegate to the annual Church Council and as a member of Vestry. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Bettye McKay Hillen of Starkville; a son and daughter-in-law, Reed III and Jan Hillen of Tupelo; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Bobby Smith of Peach Tree City, Ga.; six grandchildren, Reed Hillen IV, Anderson Hillen, Kathleen Hillen, Tyler Smith, Blake Smith and Morgan Smith; and a sister, Kathleen Hillen Herbertson of Jacksonville, Fla. The family would like to extend appreciation and sincere thanks to doctors, nurses and caregivers that throughout the years and who most recently provided concern, care, support, and expertise that allowed Walter to live a full and complete life.
