CDR Walter Jackson Wright, Jr., USN, Ret., age 88, resident of Columbus, died on Monday, January 7, 2013 at Columbus Medical Center. Graveside services will be held at Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Road, Columbus on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, 3 p.m. with Rev. (Dr.) Buddy Cooper and Rev. Shane Green officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 4071 Macon Road, Columbus. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. Born May 6, 1924 in Savannah, GA to Walter Jackson Wright and Marie Strong Wright, he attended Columbus public schools and The Citadel prior to serving in World War II as a pilot in the 20th Air Force in the CBI and Pacific Theaters. After graduation from Auburn he became a Naval Aviator, retiring in 1966 following a tour in Vietnam aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hancock. He was Director of Administration for the Columbus Consolidated Government for 21 years, retiring in 1989. CDR Wright was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Rotary Club of Columbus, and was Chairman of the Board of Elections. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Kay Ward Wright. Survivors include daughters, Kelly Ward Wright and Kathy Wright Tanner; two grandchildren, Carson Kathryn Tanner and Hallie Elizabeth Tanner. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2101 Wildwood Ave., Columbus, GA 31906 or Muscogee County Humane Society, 4900 Milgen Road, Columbus, GA 31907.
