Hawkins Jacksonville,FL Date of Death: 04/18/2007 Notice Hawkins, Walter Borden Sonny HAWKINS Walter Sonny Borden Hawkins passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida on August 31, 1920; the son of Walter Hawkins, Jr. and Elizabeth Borden. He received his education at West Riverside Elementary, John Gorrie Junior High and Robert E. Lee High School, where he was a member of the TDT fraternity. He attended The Citadel, Charleston, S.C. and The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C., where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations with the Thirteenth Fighter Command and the Fifth Air Force. At the conclusion of the war, he remained active in the United States Air Force Reserve and retired after 25 years of service with the rank of Colonel. After he returned from the war, he joined the family fruit business in 1946 and developed the Walter Hawkins Fruit Company which served the Jacksonville area until 1991. In 1991, he joined forces with Kuhn Flowers as a fruit consultant. He was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. He was a past president of The Rotary Club of Jacksonville and received the Paul Harris Fellow distinction. He was a Past Commodore of The Florida Yacht Club, a Past Captain and King of Ye Mystic Revelers, and a member of The Friars Club and River Rats. He was married to Virginia Tillie Blount Hawkins, preceded in death, for 56 years. He is survived by a son, Walter Borden Hawkins, Jr., and his wife, Sue, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and a daughter, Margaret Harnsberger Vetterlein, and her husband, Joseph R. Vetterlein, of Atlanta, GA; grandson, Walter Borden Hawkins, III and step-grandson James Robert Murray and his wife, Sheri; granddaughters: Paige Tabaka Vohs and her husband, Derrick V. Vohs, and Virginia Tabaka Walthour, and her husband, C. Perry Walthour; great grandson, Stockton Woodall Vohs; great granddaughters: Virginia Adell Vohs, Margaret Fleming Walthour and Piper Mackenzie Murray. A family graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery prior to a Memorial Service at St. Marks Episcopal Church, 4129 Ortega Boulevard, on Saturday, April 21, 2007 at 2:00 P.M.
