Wallace W. (Skipper) Brawley, Jr., 82, of Spartanburg, passed away peacefully at his home in Spartanburg, SC on November 29, 2022.
He is survived by his loving wife Kay (Panny) Brawley, his daughter Bonnie Wells of Hays, NC, her husband and two sons.
Skipper was a man of many interests. A graduate of the Citadel Military College of South Carolina Class of 1962. He was an avid supporter of his school and alumni association for many years. He cherished the network of friends that he made during his years there, and kept in touch with many for the rest of his life.
After graduation, Skipper entered the Navy, and was a respected naval aviator. He served 4 tours in Vietnam. Flying was his first love.
Among his other notable accomplishments, he was an Anglican Bishop and a viral geneticist. Both his faith and his education played an important role when he was called to the first Ebola outbreak in what is now known as Zaire.
He held two advanced degrees – a PhD and a D.Sc.
Skipper was a humanitarian and supported many charities throughout his life. In recent years he served on the Board of Directors of the Spartanburg Regional Foundation, and was extremely proud of the outstanding work done by that organization.
He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
