William Edwin “Ed” Latham, of Rock Hill, S.C., died March 26, 2009. Born May 11, 1937, in Dallas, Texas, to Clarence V. Latham and Mary Allison Latham, later the family moved to Easley, S.C., where Mr Latham spent most summers with his grandparents in Sylva, N.C. He was a Class of 1958 graduate of the Citadel where he received a degree in Civil Engineering, and was a life long member of the Citadel Alumni Association. In June 1959, he married Amelia Elizabeth Adams in Charleston, S.C. He began his career with the Highway Department and earned his registration as a professional Civil Engineer for North and South Carolina. Mr. Latham worked with the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads, working on the Blue Ridge Parkway and in Raleigh, N.C. In 1966, he joined the N.C. Highway Dept. and later served as State Construction Engineer. In 1978, he moved his family to Rock Hill and worked with the Carolinas Branch of Associated General Contractors in Charlotte, N.C. until retiring in May of 2002. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour where he served on the Vestry, as a youth advisor and on the finance committee. Ed is survived by his wife, Amelia Adams Latham; children and their spouses, Dick Latham of Charleston, S.C., Dan and Becky Latham of Mars Hill, N.C., and Allison and Jeff Taylor of Rock Hill; grandchildren, Danielle and Amelia Latham, Sarah, Jessica, Kelly, Will and Owen Taylor; brother, Vic Latham of Lock Port, Ill.; and his aunt, Hattie Hilda Allison of Sylva, N.C. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Robert Latham; and sister, Margaret L Catherall. A memorial service for Mr. Latham will be held 2 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2009, at the Episcopal Church Of Our Saviour, with burial following at the Smyth Garden at the church. Dr. Charles Foss will officiate services. The family will receive friends following the service in Lumpkin Hall at the Episcopal Church and other times at the residence.
