Thomas Lee Read, of Charleston, entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of October 30, 2011, Thomas Lee Read, husband of Anne Dosher Read. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lee Read are invited to attend the funeral services of the former in St. James Episcopal Church, Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Interment, Churchyard. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Wednesday between 4:00 and 6:00pm. Mr. Read was born May 10, 1930 in Dobbs Ferry, NY, the son of Thomas Carpenter Read and Helen Emerson Read. He graduated from the High School of Charleston in 1947, then from The Citadel with a BS in Civil Engineering in 1952. He served with the United States Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean conflict. Silver Service REALTOR Emeritus, Thomas was president of the Charleston Trident Association of REALTORS in 1965, and President of the South Carolina REALTORS in 1978. He was REALTOR of the Year in 1978. He served as Trustee of Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Retirement Community from 1983 to 1998, and as Board Chair from 1990 to 1996. In recognition of his many contributions to Bishop Gadsden, the Community named its skilled nursing center The Read Cloister in his honor. He served as a Director (Emeritus) of The Charleston Local Development Corporation. He retired as President of Read and Read REALTORS. An avid photographer, his hobby took him to places around the world, feeding his love for travel. His subjects included wildlife and landscapes, but also crossed over into his involvement in local development. He regularly took aerial photographs around Charleston, as well as cataloged local development, especially Bishop Gadsden. His other activities were tennis and walking. Each afforded him time with his closest friends. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife, Anne; two sons: Thomas L. Read, Jr. (Sheila) and William S. D. Read (Jane); two daughters: Anne Pleasants Read and Helen Read Bertrand, M.D; one brother: Emerson B. Read (Marie); nine grandchildren: Eliza (Jamie), Mary, Thomas III, Rebecca, Gracie, Annie, Heyward, Alexander, and Virginia, all of Charleston, SC.
