Thomas Houston White, better known as “Tom”, died June 5th 2015 in Greenville, SC. He was the beloved husband of Audrey Roe White. Born in Greenville, S.C, son of the late Len Graham and Corean Gossett White. Tom was a founding member of Saint Matthew United Methodist Church. He served as church treasurer for many years and also served on various church boards. He was a member of the Christian Fellowship class.
Tom attended Mercer University where he was a life member of Kappa Alfa Fraternity. Tom graduated from The Citadel in 1950 and was a life member of the Citadel Alumni association. A Veteran of the US Navy, he served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theater in World War ll. A pilot receiving his license to fly at an early age, Tom was a member of the “Old Time Fly Boys.”
Tom was the retired owner and President of White Transport Corporation before selling the company to Old Dominion Freight Line. He later was affiliated with Christopher Truck sales.
Tom was gifted with a quick wit and had a great sense of humor. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. In addition to his wife of almost 68 years are two daughters Audrey (Bunny) Morgan (George E. of Gaffney, SC) and Harriet Lynn Hopple (James of Greenville, SC.) Two granddaughters Audrey (Katie) and Mark Lester of Norcross, GA., Holly Houston and Jack Easterby of Columbia, SC, and two grandsons, George Jr. and Elizabeth Morgan of Augusta, GA, and John and Claire Hopple of Nashville, TN. Five great grandchildren Brandon Lester, Houston Easterby, Harriet Easterby, Ellie Morgan, and Libby Morgan. Also surviving are one niece and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Ann Epps.
Services will be held Monday, June 8, 2015 at 11:00am at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Remembrance Chapel. Visitation will follow the service.
