Thomas Edmondson Ruffin Sr. HEMINGWAY ù; Thomas Edmondson Ruffin Sr., 89, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, in McLeod Hospice House.Mr. Ruffin was born in Olanta, a son of the late Thomas E. Ruffin and Anna Belle Tomlinson Ruffin. He was the founder of Ruffins Department Stores Inc., a member of Hemingway First Baptist Church and former deacon, past president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Hemingway Merchants Association. Mr. Ruffin was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II, attended The Citadel and the University of South Carolina, a member of the American Legion Post No. 84, Indiantown Masonic Lodge No. 165 and the Civitas.He was married to the late Johanna Finklea Ruffin. Surviving are his children, Susan R. (Arnold) Brown of Johnsonville and Thomas E. (Marguerite) Ruffin Jr. of Murrells Inlet; sister, Helen Scarborough of Charlotte, N.C.; brother, Samuel James Ruffin of Andrews; grandchildren, Joanna B. (Stephen) Altman of Johnsonville, Christina B. (Basil) Owens of Hemingway, Thomas E. Ruffin III and John Layton Ruffin, both of Murrells Inlet; and great-grandson, William Matthew Altman of Johnsonville.Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery in Hyman, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway.
