Thomas Arthur “Tom” Murdoch, age 74, of Hope Valley, RI, passed away suddenly on December 16th, 2024, at Rhode Island Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Tom was born in Annapolis, MD to Earle and Alice Murdoch. He grew up on a working farm in Abbeville, South Carolina, and had a deep connection with animals and nature throughout his life. He was an avid gardener, tending fruit, vegetable, and flower gardens wherever he lived.
Tom was a beloved husband to his wife, Patricia, of 45 years; father to John, Ann (James) Roth, and Emma; father-in-law to James; and grandfather to Alice and Eli Roth. He loved his family so much, and found joy in talking with his children and playing with his grandchildren. He was a kind and gregarious person who never met a stranger and was known for his prolific storytelling. An intellectually curious man, he was a voracious reader, a seasoned traveler, and had a deep appreciation for an eclectic array of both art and music. He was best known for his passion for both learning and teaching history.
Tom graduated from The Citadel in 1972 and served as a Lieutenant in the US Air Force. He had a remarkably versatile skill set, at times working as a welder, blacksmith, truck driver, carpenter, and park ranger, but his true calling was teaching. This was his life’s purpose and his most impactful role, where he inspired students to believe in themselves and pursue the lives they found most rewarding.
We could write a tome about Tom as a father, husband, son, brother, student, teacher, and friend, but it simply couldn’t begin to capture the depth of his intellect, humor, and kindness.
He will be truly missed by all who knew him.
Celebration of Life to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy.
