Thomas Armstrong Horst, Jr. age 86, of Mobile, AL, died September 22, 2014. Tom attended Leinkauf Elementary School. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1945 and The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. in 1949, earning his commission as an officer in the United States Air Force. Following his Air Force service, he was employed by The Merchants National Bank from April 1950 until his retirement in July 1981. He served in numerous capacities with the Bank, including Executive Vice President and Senior Commercial Loan Officer. At the time of his retirement, he served as head of the Trust Department. Tom married Joan Covington Wilson of Hazlehurst, MS. May 1, 1954. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas Armstrong Horst and Adele Bounds Horst, his former wife Joan Wilson Horst, and by two of his grandsons, Joseph Edward Hearn and Daniel Wilson Horst. He is survived by his children, Joan Horst Hamilton (Neil), Thomas Armstrong Horst, III, and Charles Wilson Horst (Kateri), his grandchildren Christopher Andrew Horst (Rebekah), Margaret Manning Horst, Michael Covington Horst and Christopher Covington Horst. He is also survived by his sister Adele Horst Campbell and brother J. B. Horst (Diane), both of Mobile, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was a member of The Mobile Country Club, several Mystic Societies, Board Member of the Mobile Airport Authority, a long time pilot and AOPA member for over 30 years. He was influential behind the scenes, for over 40 years serving as a financial manager and advisor to both Congressmen and local officials. An avid and accomplished sportsman with a true love of the outdoors, he enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Alabama-Tombigbee and Mobile-Tensaw River Deltas, trout fishing with close friends around Dauphin and Chandeleur Islands, and Scuba diving throughout the Carribean. Later in life he enjoyed numerous annual trips fly-fishing for salmon in Alaska. Services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Monday, October 13, 2014 with a visitation at 9:00am followed by services at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Pine Crest Cemetery.
