Dr. Theodore Steinberg Levy, age 97, of Delray Beach, FL and Fairfield, CT, passed away peacefully on May 14th, 2023 at his home with his family by his side. He was the son of the late Sadie and Jacob Steinberg of Batesburg, SC.
Theodore graduated from the Citadel in Charleston, SC and went on to receive his Medical Degree from the Medical College of SC as one of their youngest graduates at age 20. He continued his training in NY at Queens General and was chief resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Beth El Hospital Brooklyn.
He started his first practice in Augusta, GA, but then was recalled as a Captain in the Army and stationed in Anniston, AL. In addition to his impressive military service, Theodore was integral in changing US Army policy to protect the honor and rights of pregnant women.
Upon discharge he moved to Fairfield, CT and practiced OB/GYN in Bridgeport, CT from 1955 to 2000. He was a well-respected and appreciated member of the medical community and had a genuine love for the generations of new babies he brought into this world. Theodore was a proud and distinguished fellow of the American College of OB/GYN as well as the American College of Surgeons.
Always active in the synagogue, he was one of the core group who designed and built in 1956 what is now the current location of Congregation B’nai Israel – the “Park Avenue Temple”.
In 1950, he married the beautiful love of his life, Enid Sue Gerstner of Brooklyn, NY. A dedicated, loving, husband and father, he was a true renaissance man; developing deep lifelong friendships and an appreciation for theater, art, and music, and travel. He most enjoyed his time with family and friends. A genuine ambassador of friendship, he welcomed the opportunity to always spend time together, always smiling, joyful, and generous.
Ted with Sue raised a devoted family (who knew love and happiness) and was beloved by many. He is survived by his wife, Sue, his five children: Bruce (wife Lynne), Mark, Cathy (husband Dave), Scott (wife Arlene), Jason (wife Carolyn); 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather – he will be missed, always in our hearts and memories.
Services will be held at Congregation B’nai Israel, 2710 Park Ave., Bridgeport on Friday, May 19 at 11 AM followed by a burial at B’nai Israel Cemetery, 183 Kings Hwy E, Fairfield.
