Sylvia Elizabeth Adams Jones, age 90, died on Sunday at Cedar Plantation in Metter, Ga. She was born in Uxbridge, Mass., and attended Worchester State College, where she received a bachelors degree. Mrs. Jones later earned a master’s of special education from The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., and taught special education for over 36 years, many of those in Bulloch County. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse with nine students, ranging from third grade to twelfth grade. With a book she got from the Statesboro Regional Library, she taught her students how to play soccer and led them to the Georgia Special Olympics State Championship, which they won.
Mrs. Jones was a recipient of the Dean Day Smith Award and loved classical music and making quilts for her family and friends. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Florence Adams; a son, Wade Hampton Jones; her sisters, Harriet Leo Boisvert and Deborah Wendler; and brother, Robert Adams.
Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Roberta (Tommy) Martin, Alice (Roy) Glidwell, all of Statesboro; Sally Brown of Alpharetta, Ga.; a son and daughter-in-law, Walter (Susan) Jones of Cary, N.C.; and seven grandchildren, Tony (Amy) Murray, Stephanie Jones, Brandon Jones, Elizabeth Jones, Haley Brown, John Glidwell and Preston Glidwell.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
The funeral service will immediately follow visitation at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Bo Davidson officiating. A private inurnment will be held in Bulloch Memorial Gardens on Thursday.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Statesboro Regional Library, 124 South Main Street, Statesboro, GA 30458.
