Steven Ernest Byrd was born 3/20/1954 in Charleston, SC and died 3/15/2024 in Tallahassee, FL. His parents were Ernest Alfred Byrd and Faye Carolyn Fairchild.
Steve always loved learning and was a member of the National Honor Society as well as on the tennis team at Middleton High School in Charleston, from which he graduated in 1972. He had a lifelong love of Clemson University and graduated with a Bachelors degree in Microbiology in 1976. He received a Masters degree from the Citadel in 1979 and an Education Specialist degree from Florida State University in 1996.
Steve had an impact on his students during his years teaching science at Middleton High School and then in Tallahassee at Florida State University School, Leon County Schools and FAMU High School. As a union representative for years, he worked for better salaries and working conditions for teachers. He was active in the United Methodist Church as a Sunday school teacher, a choir member and as a member of Promise Keepers.
He is survived by his wife Joan, sons Justin and Matthew, daughters-in-law Khusbu Shakafi and Miriam Lynch, grandson Basil, sister Michele Arms, nieces Danielle Spies, Melissa Moravan and Christine Klimesky, brother Keven Byrd, brother-in-law Ronald Gladney, Aunt Sara Fesperman and many great nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life for Steven will be held Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32312.
