A visitation for Stephen Paul Roof, 22, of Winnsboro, will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2012, at Pope Funeral Home in Winnsboro, SC. Burial plans will be announced. Stephen died December 23, 2012, in Winnsboro, SC. He was the son of Sgt. Maj. (Ret.) Michael Devon and Sheila Kinch Roof, also of Winnsboro. Stephen was born December 19, 1990, in Leominster, MA. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Ascension and a graduate of Richard Winn Academy. Stephen had completed three semesters while working toward his degree in criminal justice at The Citadel and had recently joined the South Carolina Army National Guard. He was scheduled to attend Infantry One-Stop Unit Training at Fort Benning, GA, and was enthusiastically anticipating his return to The Citadel to complete his education after graduating from his military training. Stephen’s goal was to lead a life dedicated to the service of others in the causes of liberty and justice; a life of protecting and defending the weak. Stephen was tall and strong, straight and clean. He was fiercely loyal and kind and generous. He was quick to forgive and honest and respectful. Above all, Stephen was full of life and was a loving person. He made us all better people by the many ways he touched our lives, and, in that way, Stephen made the world around him a better place. In addition to his parents, Stephen is survived by his older sister, Michelle Devon Roof of Denver, CO, his paternal grandparents, Eugene Paul and Johann Roof of Winnsboro, his maternal grandmother, Marietta March Kinch of Auburn, NY, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Stephen Roof Fund at Richard Winn Academy, 1796 Old Chester Road, Winnsboro, SC 29180 to be used as a scholarship for a future Citadel cadet. Pope Funeral Home is serving the Roof family. Online condolences may be sent to the Roof family at www.popefuneralhomesc.com. Tags: 2013
